About the Green Fairy

The Green Fairy is my alter ego. I would love to have a magic wand to wave over all humans and make a wish to reduce the usage of our natural resources to a sustainable level and also reduce our waste and emissions to a rate that the Earth can actually process and re-absorb. "Ping!"
My path is one of dedication to the Earth. Ever since I can remember I have had extreme curiosity for nature, and the more I learn, the more respect and awe I have for it. I would like to dedicate my life’s energies to generating awareness about the natural environment, the interconnectedness of all things, and hence, the effect we have on our ecosystems.
I am an idealist wanting to do something about humans' unsustainable ways. I understand we, as people, have basic needs that have to be fulfilled. But I also understand that there are production rates of natural resources and absorption rates of wastes. I think that we humans can have a decent standard of living while at the same time staying within the boundaries of these rates of production and absorption of the Earth. That is, we can live sustainably.
What interests me the most is this interface between humans and the environment, and what we can do to live healthy, sustainable lives. I have training in Biology, Philosophy, Ecology, Sustainability, Ecological Economics, Teaching, Literature, Sales and Customer Service, and speak Spanish, English and French fluently.
I have good rapport with people and love teaching and public speaking. I have done lots of volunteer work. Some with the Smithsonian institution, but mostly within my neighborhood (Greenbelt, MD), helping to establish a Forest Preserve by lobbying our Council and then by participating in the Forest Preserve Task Force to suggest the management guidelines for the new Preserve. The ordinance was passed on June, 2007, to preserve the woods in its primitive state. I am now on the Board of Directors for our coop housing (GHI), and also volunteer for our local Yoga studio (Greenbelt Om).
Achieving a high academic degree (PhD) has given me the opportunity to develop strong organizational, interpersonal, writing and analytical skills. My dissertation included organizing workshops and focus groups in small villages in Mexico, designed to explain complex ecosystem functions and related human actions in an easily understandable and effective fashion.
Working at Looney Labs has given me the opportunity to learn about web writing, marketing, promotion, and customer service/follow-up experience (and Looney games!). I feel my particular combination of skills provides a solid base on which we might foster the vision of a sustainable society.
